The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Approves Obstacle Events for Competition
Gymnastics decision-making bodies gave their in-principle approval for the inclusion of two new gymnastic disciplines based around an obstacle course.
Following the development of a new discipline, the FIG’s Executive Committee and Council approved the formal inclusion of two formats of competitive obstacle course events: spring & freestyle. The obstacle course sprint is an against-the-clock format, and the obstacle course freestyle is based on performances that will be judged.
With a view to organise World Cup events starting in 2018, the course for these competitions will be ‘based on real-world shapes found in urban and natural environments’.
The FIG has partnered with Mouvement International du Parkour, Freerunning et l'Art du déplacement, the APEX School of Movement and JUMP Freerun to help plan and initiate these events.
