Russia Set to Miss World Athletics Championships in London
Russia will not compete at this summer’s World Championships after their suspension by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was extended.
Russia was originally suspended in November 2015 and its athletics team was denied participation at the Rio Olympics the following year. In an IAAF meeting in Monaco on Monday, the Council voted to continue the ban on Russian athletes beyond the World Championships which is to be held in London in 6 months’ time.
Rune Andersen, the independent chairman of the IAAF Taskforce indicated that the Russian Track and Field Federation (RUSAF) was unlikely to be reinstated until the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) declared the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) code-compliant.
The IAAF has, however, established a pathway for athletes who are not tainted by the Russian system to compete as neutral competitors if certain criteria are met.
