Israel Folau’s career on the line following homophobic social media posts
Rugby player Israel Folau is facing criticism and sanctioning following another anti-gay social media outburst.
Folau published an image on his Instagram page which said, “WARNING, Drunks, Homosexuals, Adulterers, Liars, Fornicators, Thieves, Atheists, Idolater…Hell Awaits You”. It is not the first time the 30 year-old devout Christian has made anti-LGBT comments on social media. He received a warning and escaped punishment last year despite outrage from sponsors and fans.
Folau recently signed a four-year contract with the Waratahs and has a deal with Rugby Australia until 2022. He now faces suspension or a possible contract termination. Rugby Australia commented, "Israel has failed to understand that the expectation of him as a Rugby Australia and NSW Waratahs employee is that he cannot share material on social media that condemns, vilifies or discriminates against people on the basis of their sexuality."
The governing body added, “The content within the post is unacceptable. It does not represent the values of the sport and is disrespectful to members of the Rugby community.” The Rugby Australia Integrity Unit is looking into the matter.
